Scribe Faris is found at the Revere satellite array.
Knight Astlin can be found behind a table in the recruitment office inside the National Guard training yard. Knight Varham's Battlefield holotape is located in a ruined house north of Relay tower 0MC-810, south of Med-Tek Research and east of Taffington boathouse. To complete the objective, the Survivor must loot holotapes from the fallen soldiers, then play them from their Pip-Boy.
Each beacon leads to the final resting place of a Brotherhood of Steel soldier, revealing the fate of their reconnaissance team. However the quest is acquired, the Sole Survivor will need to trace the sources of three distress signals. Alternatively, the Pip-Boy may detect one of the emergency distress beacons while exploring, automatically activating the quest. The Sole Survivor can be given The Lost Patrol by speaking to Paladin Danse or Lancer Captain Kells after completing Call to Arms but before triggering Shadow of Steel. This article has more details. This quest can be initiated in one of three ways. It's probably not enough to kill the Super Mutants on its own, but it's one hell of a distraction.
Outsource! If you've visited the Robotics Disposal Ground you can find a Combat Sentry that will happily roll over to the Revere Satellite Array and attack for you. The corpse you’re looking for - and the Scribe Faris’ Holotape and Holotag - are in the shack partway up. Slip in here and climb up onto the nearest Array. If you give the Array a wide berth you can find a hole in the fence around the southeast corner. Hide! It’s not easy, but you can sneak onto the grounds by crouching low and slinking around. Melee Mutants will pursue gunslingers won’t. (Though he can also make your day if you manage to shoot the Mini Nuke tucked under his arm.) If you want to even the odds a little, cause a ruckus and run into the woods. Keep an eye open for the Suicider, as he can ruin your party really quickly. There are several Mutants with their own melee weapons, as well, so even if you are spotted, your resulting brawl may not bring in reinforcements. The Super Mutants cross paths occasionally, but there’s enough room for you to slip around relatively undetected. Either snipe from afar, aiming for the Super Mutants when they get up high, or slip in and try to stealth kill with melee weapons. Fight! To hell with the odds! If you decide to battle, you’re wiser to stick to the shadows and stealth it out.
